Fresh local produce combines with international influences to provide great dining experiences. The Bathurst Region is full of flavour! Declared a townsite in 1815 and a city in 1885 Bathurst is Australia’s oldest inland settlement and as such was an important regional centre and gateway for much of the exploration and development that took place in inland New South Wales. This process was accelerated in 1851 by the discovery in the region of Australia’s first payable gold. As a result, the city has a strong heritage reinforced by a rich culture with both historic and contemporary components. Today, the City of Bathurst is virtually synonymous with motor racing, known throughout the world because of its challenging and picturesque motor racing circuit. Bathurst is surrounded by many beautiful villages. Hill End renowned for the riches of its gold mines. Peel surrounded by rolling hills which once played host to many Aboriginal and white clashes is the village of Peel. O'Connell a picturesque village classified by the National Trust as a Conservation Area. Rockley known as one of the oldest settlements west of the Blue Mountains. Sofala is Australia's oldest surviving Gold Town. Sunny Corner known for its silver mine being the richest in Australia prior to silver being discovered at Broken Hill. Tarana is in a secluded and pretty valley halfway between Bathurst and Lithgow. Wattle Flat a thriving gold town in 1855 when gold was discovered in the area.
